Vietnam: New Decree Punishes Press

 The Vietnamese government's new media decree, which fines journalists for vague infractions and requires them to publish sources, is a further blow to freedom of expression in Vietnam, Human Rights Watch said today. Decree No. 2, Sanctions for Administrative Violations in Journalism and Publishing, goes into effect on February 25, 2011.

Vietnamese Refugees Welcomed to Canada


TORONTO—Canada will welcome 50 Montagnard refugees who had fled persecution in Vietnam, ImmigrationMinister Jason Kenney announced Wednesday.

Montagnard hill tribespeople, who come from Vietnam’s Central Highlands, face reprisals in Vietnam because they fought beside the Americans and the Republic of Vietnam. This group fled in 2006 and crossed the border into Cambodia but had to be rushed to Canada because the refugee centre there is closing.

The Information and Communication Technology Ministry will be asked to block a website offering a surrogate mother service using Vietnamese women in Thailand.
Immigration police raided a Taiwanese company - Baby 101 Co - on Ramkhamhaeng Road on Wednesday and charged its executive with human trafficking after it was found to offer an illegal surrogacy service.

and Bahrain, also in Yemen.

Aussie dead in Vietnam tragedy



A 32-year-old Australian man was among 12 people killed when a wooden tour boat sank in Vietnam's Ha Long Bay.
Unofficial reports have identified the Vietnamese-Australian as Ngoc Chau Lam, but the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is yet to release his name.
A surviving 36-year-old Australian, also of Vietnamese origin, was named as Nguyen Duy Khuong. He is believed to be from Victoria, and is receiving consular assistance.

Lunar New Year parade and festival draw thousands


GARDEN GROVE – Dung Vu remembers how he and his friends organized the first Tet Festival in 1982, which covered a block of Hoover Street in Westminster.
It was a matter of building everything from the ground up – stage, decorations, gates. As a young student member of the Union of Vietnamese Student Associations, Vu says he never imagined that he would return 30 years later as an alumni organizer of the festival, proudly carrying the yellow-and-red South Vietnamese flag.

After 30 years, Tet Festival continues to give back

GARDEN GROVE – Frances Nguyen remembers the Tet Festival when it was just a block party on Hoover Street in Westminster.
In 1982, as waves of Vietnamese refugees were pouring into California and Orange County after the Fall of Saigon in 1975, the Tet Festival, which heralds the Lunar New Year, was a source of comfort for those who were hurting.
